La Maison,

Our history

In 1925,the leather craftsman Jacques Hopenstand opened the doors of his first workshop in Paris.

J.Hopenstand keeps serving customers who care about details, and look for unique products. Their wishes and endless imagination remain the source of inspiration of the J.Hopenstand craftsmen.

In 1927,Jacques Hopenstand married Francine Gauthey, the former first-hand at Poiret and Vionnet.

Francine used to help Jacques in the making and selling of the creations. Following the example of their great grandmother, the great grandchildren join their forces to keep writing the family history.

In 1932,installation on Rue de l’Echiquier, Paris

Jacques turned his clients' ideas into unique leather goods. Whether it was finding leather that was the exact same shade of green as an avocado or creating a bag clasp featuring pearls from a family necklace, this was his daily routine.

From 1935,Jacques collaborated with numerous fashion houses such as Schiaparelli and Sacks Fifth Avenue.

He knew how to adapt to all their whims while offering precision, elegance, and versatility. Jacques took care to cut, assemble, thread, and sew each of his creations by hand.

In 1995,the link is created...

Jacques and Francine enjoy spending time with their great-grandsons and introducing them to art and craftsmanship.

In 2015,official reopening of the workshops by Rémi and Renaud.

In 2016,J.Hopenstand began a new chapter in its history with the launch of the Art to Wear collection. A collection conceived between art and craftsmanship.

As a tribute to our great grandfather, we decided to offer our belts as a support of expression to contemporary artists we admire. Through these creations, leather goods move beyond their purely functional purpose to enter a broader world where materials, shapes, and colors come together. Each new collaboration opens new perspectives and a different approach on the project.

In 2025,J.Hopenstand celebrates a century of history. One hundred years dedicated to leather, craftsmanship, and the pursuit of high quality products.

To mark this anniversary, the House is unveiling Le Nathalie, a bag designed as a new expression of its craftsmanship. Leather, colors, topstitching, pockets, and shoulder strap: every detail can be chosen, adjusted, and designed. A piece that is rooted in J.Hopenstand’s history.
