Art To Wear

Jaume Plensa

2022

Famous for his various illustrations of the human face using different medias, Spanish sculptor Jaume Plensa has conceived a new sensational piece. The face is not overly defined, making it universally recognisable, a key attribute of the artist’s work. Indeed, Jaume Plensa's pieces highlight the shared elements of humanity rather than the disparities. Similarly, he blends the old and the new by respecting the heritage of the materials he is working with whilst maintaining a keen awareness of our rapidly changing society, technology, and the way people interact with art and space. Plensa combines classical sculpture materials such as stainless steel and bronze with natural forces like water and light, which he masterfully merges with the subject matter as well as the material form of his work. His works create overwhelming feelings of vitality and vibrance in exhibition spaces. Asked about one of his creations, the artist once said that it was “a beautiful metaphor about people. All of us are similar, but each of us is completely unique”.
