Art To Wear

Allan McCollum

2024

McCollum explores the boundaries of art, skillfully navigating between minimalism and maximalism. His career, which began in the 1960s in Los Angeles, is marked by the emblematic Surrogate Paintings series, that he started in 1978. Composed of multiple small frames, these works challenged the conventions of traditional painting and were the first steps towards his exploration of the boundaries between the single and the multiple. But in 2005, the artist took a decisive step with ‘The Shapes Project’. In this project, he created an algorithm capable of generating 31 billion unique two-dimensional shapes, one for each human being estimated to live on Earth. He regularly draws on this immense database for his creations, ensuring that each shape resembles no other. This innovative approach challenges the notion of originality in a world dominated by mass production, and explores the boundaries between the unique and the multiple.

The belt embodies the very essence of the ‘Shapes project’ with 20 different buckles, thus all unique.

Allan McCollum (born in 1944) is a post-conceptual artist known for his bold creation of large-scale one-off works, whether in sculpture, drawing or photography. His singular collections, ranging from a few pieces to thousands, challenge the classic notion of artistic rarity by emphasising singularity through subtle variations. Today, McCollum’s works can be found in the collections of various art institutions, including the Centre Pompidou, the MoMA, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum and the MAMCO.
